Log out without internet

Assume you were on a public network surfing the net. You are logged in and suddenly the connectivity breaks. You are left with no option but leave the public computer. But what if connectivity later on gets enabled and the person on the system this time is not you?

What happens in most of this sort of situations is that he is authorized to use your personal account because last time when you were logged in, you did not get time to log-out due to no connectivity. How to tackle with this problem?

Many times, this can be avoided by simply closing your browser and reopening it. It ends up your last login session and starts afresh. But a better and safer way is as described below.

Most of the websites use something called "cookie" to identify your login session each time you refresh your page. A cookie is simply a text. The first time you open the website, it checks if your browser has sent any cookie to the website-server. If not, it means, you are still not logged in(1) and shows you the login page of its website. The website creates a random cookie with some identifier code (of course in text form) and sends it to your browser once you log in. Site also keeps a copy of that cookie with itself along with the date and time it was made. After you gets logged in, suppose you are refreshing the pages or surfing the different pages within the website, each time the cookie received by your browser is sent back to the website. If it matches with the ditto copy of cookie already present in the server, means you are still the authenticated user and it lets you continue the surf. Once you log out, the cookie is deleted from the server or your browser or both. So, next time you surf, no matching may take place and you are redirected to login page only. Some cookies come with expiry period after which, it gets wasted by itself and you are logged out automatically. Similar concept is responsible for a single login for many different linked websites. For example, Gmail, Orkut, Google and Blogger, all are linked. Hence, once you login to any one of them, you need not to login to other because they share the same cookie to identify you authentication. Similarly, logging out from any one of them deletes the cookie and you gets logged out from all of them.

Now what if you delete the cookie while you are browsing? Say, I am using Orkut and I have already logged in. I open different pages and each time the cookie is given a tally (which matches successfully if not logged out). Now if I manually delete the cookies, the next time I change the page, matching of cookie will be unsuccessful and I will be redirected to login page. It means my session has ended. Got an idea? Gotcha!!

So here is what we should do.
Situation: I am using a public Wi-Fi and suddenly connection breaks. I closed the browser window but I am still afraid if meanwhile my fiancee asks for my laptop and by chance, Wi-Fi also gets into connection, he may be automatically gets logged into my account even without knowing password because I could not logout last time I used the net.
Solution: I will manually delete my cookies. If I am not sure which cookies are for which website, I don't care. I will delete them all. (It is under the Tools->Options->Privacy for Mozilla Firefox)

When you click on something like "keep me logged in", it means that don't delete the cookies if I close the browser without logging out. If you uncheck it, it means delete all cookies as soon I close the browser window. And those like "keep logged in for 30 days" etc. send cookies which have an expiry date = your current date + 30 days.
Cookies are simple text of few kb, yet play magical role in our privacy handling :).

Google Transliteration

(Click on the images to view them clearly).

Love to write in your own language? Google transliteration is a great tool for you. Just open Google and search for Transliteration. Open Google transliteration and start typing your language words the way you do while you chat. For example, if you want to type in Hindi, (let the key word is राम), simply type Ram. It will automatically be converted to राम as soon you hit space bar or enter. For two words having similar spellings in like माँ and मान, you type Maan.
In such cases, the Google transliterator provides you with different options amongst which you can choose the appropriate one.Wanna do the same on your all the applications? Like Word, Notepad etc? Another help from Google. Download the IME. Select your language and install it and select the language of your choice from the language bar at the taskbar.
If you want to switch between the languages by simply a shortcut, simply follow the following procedure. (Images from Windows XP)

1. Open Control Panel and select "Regional and languages options".

2. Open languages tab.

3. Click Details and select your language.

4. Click on key settings.

5. Select "switch between input languages".

6.Click on "change key sequence".

7. Select your shortcut. (Here selected "Ctrl + Shift").

8. Click all OKs you encounter.

This is a freeware software and can be downloaded very easily once you google "Digsby free download". The software enables you to chat through your MSN, Yahoo, G-Talk, Facebook, MySpace, ICQ and Jabber, all simultaneously. And, not only this, yout you can add any number of accounts of any messenger service. For example, I use my three G-Mail accounts, four Yahoo accounts and two Facebook accounts, again simultaneously.

But this is not the limit. Besides the IM services mentioned above, Digsby also allows to add e-mail accounts of G-Mail, Hotmail, Yahoo, AOL, PAP and IMAP, again more than just one. Digsby also allows to add the social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and LinkedIn

Omegle

Fond of chatting? Omegle is for you.. Open up the website omegle.com and start chatting with strangers. The server connects you randomly with any of the other person on the entire earth and start chatting. No login required. No password. And no risk of loosing privacy as well.

Warnings:
1) The website does not mind who is chatting with whom. The opposite operator can be man or a woman. It is absolutely random. And it is very probable that the person you are going to interact with, randomly, is looking for some inappropriate content to chat with. The 'inappropriate' in 99% cases here means 'sexual chat' . So, if you have decided to chat with a stranger, be ready to face non-social elements as well.
2) People keep on using such websites to promote their websites etc. They will provide with URL which if you click on, or run in the browser, may be harmful, both as a security risk, and as anything could open in return of your link, even it may be 'porn website'. Never click the links until you are very sure that the link given to you is safe.

I recommend, enjoy the site. No problem, but if you have decided to open up 'omegle', kindly don't open up it in public places or in front of family etc as what the next person will say, is never known. Enjoy it in private, or with your friends in private. But again, no clicking or opening the unknown susceptible links.

The website also provides you and option to download the chat you made and even sharing the chat on facebook (only if you want). You can break the chat any time, and start a new one in between the chat.

'IQ' of Ladies, for Gentelmen

The Intelligence quotient is never generalised. It is always relative to the same age group and is always age dependent. In fact the absolute way of calculating IQ is

Mental Age
----------------- x (100)
Chronological Age

The chronological age means the actual age since your birth. And the mental age is calculated on the basis of a particular test. For knowing your accurate IQ level, you must always refer to your psychologist. He/she will assess you and check out your level. But you can also get a reliable and approximate result online. Many websites offer this and produce results based on the Gauss bell curve. The Mensa level is supposed to be of IQ 130. It is assumed that the IQ of 100 is the average i.e. most of the people are of the same mental maturity as that should be according to the nature of age. As the level keeps on increasing to 110, you are at intelligent quiet enough. At 120 you are an excellent and at 140, you are a genius.

The level of 132 means you are among top 2% people of the world.
The level of 134 means you are among top 1% people of the world.

Some of the most intellectual men ever born on this earth are no more today. At that time the testing of IQ wasn't present. It arouse in early 1800's. Still, on the basis of the work which those men/women left behind, professional psychoanalysts studied them and calculated their IQ

Few of them are as under

Leonardo da Vinci : 220
Pascal : 195
Issac Newton : 190
Michaelangelo : 180
Galileo : 185
Kepler : 175
Darwin : 165
Mozart : 165
Einstein : 160
Copernicus : 160
Hitler : 141
(Source : http://www.kids-iq-tests.com/famous2.html )

The famous mathematician Leibniz had IQ of 205. It means that at the age of 10, he could think like that of a man of age 20.5 years.

Among the so called best chess players ever born, Gary Kasparov is said to have IQ of 190 and Bobby Fischer had 187. The bell curve of Gauss states that those above 120 are very super intelligent and 90-109 are Normal. Below 90 is a border-line minute mental deficiency and below score of 35 is sever mental retardation.

Knowing this, I was too eager to know my own IQ. I gave tests on various websites and my score varied between 137 to 146.

Check out your own scores. But let me tell you something. The online tests are not the zenith. They are just an estimate. If you get a score of about 90-100, you are absolutely normal. One can't judge your all ability just on the basis of 30 questions. Sometimes, they are also language dependent. If your mother tongue is not US English and you are giving test in English, it is very probable that your test will underestimate you and results may vary even at the standard deviation of 15.

While checking the IQ of a 10 year old girl, she was asked to name as many words as possible in 30 seconds. And she went on speaking "One, Two, Three, Four......" and finished upto 82. In fact, she even over passed the question. So, it's not always that the tests are accurate and your lateral thinking is also covered. But somehow, the website regulators have managed to keep a basic standard on the psychological analysis which makes the online tests very much reliable.

The highest IQ I have ever heard belongs to Marilyn Vos Savant with a score of 228. She is an author, a columnist in an American magazine, and a lecturer. The Guinness book of world record goes to her for the highest IQ and here we know that she is a woman. After her is Chris Langan at 207. What a gap!!!

I told all this because few days back, one of you girls reported me that some of your ill-mannered classmate boys say that me, the Richa Sorot can't be a girl because girls don't have that much brain. Bloody hell to this male dominant society. I don't argue on me being a male or a female. But I argue on the cheap mentality of such boys who treat as if girls are mentally week. Next time, when any of the boys say so, just slap him hard once from my side and show them that girls are no less. We are proud to be born as girls.

Security breaching in my Google account

Last day, I tried to log into my gmail account other than the usual one of Richa Sorot and I rarely open, and guess what? I found that it has been hacked. Its password was changed. I tried my facebook but agin hacked. I tried to open Orkut and google account also but all in vain. I tried some sort of techy ways and found that actually the google itself was a little bit confused weather the account even exist or not. I tried to send an e-mail to my account but mailer-demon replied that account does not exist and permanent failure in the delivery of e-mail. But when I tried to create another account with the same name, which google claims that it does not exist, this time it says that account already exist and username was not available. For some time, my lovely brain also stunned. Already the tension was that "How the hell can someone breach into my security?" but after all this is just a machine. The codes can be broken. The security can be breached. And when the news of chinese hackers hacking major India websites like those of residents next to the President of India, and compromising the defence websites like those of "Army Institute of Technology, Pune" for several months and recovered in tedious ways, everything is possible.
The link for that famous news clip is here
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/India/Made-in-China-Cyber-spying-system-with-focus-on-India/articleshow/5891039.cms
How much google pays to its employees isn't the point of concern. But this time, both google and Yahoo had to retreat from China, this is bitter truth for security consultants.

Two days back, our college became Wi-Fi enabled. We were to fill up a form before getting the connection to authenticate the individual Server Proxies for our lappies and stating that "I wil be the sole responsible for any breaching of security through my IP address." And again to the shock of college, me and my colleague came to know the passcode key using just a simple facility of Windows-7, which the administration does not provide to any of the users. We won't misuse the key but of course, it was as easy as snatching a lolypop from a kid". And now we know how to keep our keys from broken. Well, the basic funda to of ethical hackers is "To learn how to defend, you need to know how to attack". :)

Well, after several hours, I was able to recover my G-mail and once the g-mail, my backbone of all other appendages of social networking was recovered, I immediately changed my passwords. Then I started to find out after all, where from my gmail was broken. Although, I tried some more complex ways but here are two simplest methods to keep an eye on your accounts and check if it is under your hands or not.

1) Open the g-mail (not in the basic HTML mode) and at the bottom of the inbox mails, you will see a statement pointing out your current IP address of the server and besides it, there is a small link "details". Click on it. There you will find the IPs of servers where from your account was opened most recently. And in my case, the most unusual activity was that on May 2, my account was opened from Punjab. Later on I found that the specific place belongs to somewhere close to Sangrur. May it be just the server or may it be just a proxy for Delhi servers. I instantly recalled that I share the password for my e-mail with my boyfriend. But he is far far from Sangrur. Well, I still need to find out what's the matter, very soon.

2) Open your Google account (not g-mail account). There if you havn't added the tool of 'Web History', enable it now. Open it up. My 'Web History' tool stated that on the same day of May 2, a search was made through my account 'How to delete G-Mail'. Now it was sure that whoever he/she was, wasn't much expert in any hacking or such sort of stuff, else this simple thing would have been known to him/her. So, the only way left is that he/she knew my password. And this time also, my index finger pointed to my beloved.

I havn't talked to him regarding this matter yet, but I can't understand why would he do that? Well, that is now a simple and personal-cum-social issue, not a technical one. So, I need not mention that here. Still, this article might help you in some ways to keep on knowing that who and where from, someone is trying to open your accounts without even knowing you.

Microsoft ICE

The image shown here wasn't a single image at the begining. You can see that the image has two opposite faces of the same wall in the same pic are at 180 degrees to each other. Well, this was possible using Microsoft ICE. It is an image manager used to stich the resembling images together. Nice software. I doubt if it is free. But if you find it, it's worth using. The stiching gives a broad view of an area. This image was created by stiching 8 different images shot at different angles and stiching together.
Here is another view of a stiched images.
Enjoy.

Youtube downloads

Since few days, I was facing problems in downloading videos from Youtube. One year earlier, I used to use www.youtubecatcher.com. After it stopped working, the most reliable way was www.keepvid.com. But soon, it was also blocked by youtube engineers from fetching data. My friends have been using Youtube downloader since 6-7 months but I never liked it. It is a cumbersome and irritating software (although easy interface). But after all those websites stopped downloading, I had only way left, to use this software.

Two days back, I found an easier way. I installed Real-Player. Once we search anything in Real-Player search bar, it opens the 'Web' tab and connects to real-player's site. There, you can use it as any normal web-browser (except using multiple tabs). I went to youtube in its browser facility and opened a video. Now once the video starts loading to be played, I paused it and right click on it. There I found an option "Dowload this video". That's cool, isn't it?

But wait.. It's too much slow. So, I decided to find an even better way and guess what? I got the best method to download youtube videos I had ever seen. Here is the way:
1) Download a 3MB software 'IDM' i.e. internet download manager. In the official website, you may find the links to buy it. But on scrolling down, the same site allows a free download too. I didin't feel any kind of restriction or low performance in choosing the free version. So, I went with it.
2) Install it. It will ask a reinstall for advanced browser's settings to be enabled. Do it. After restart, you are almost ready.
3) Now, one thing. Alththough this manager is an excellent download manager which scoops up almost entire net-traffic and the speed of all the other proxy users from your computer will drop (if any). And you will be the one to get the entire speed devoted to download. May be you will be able to download the contents at 70-80kbps and others might not be able to even open up their google web-page. But here is the best feature of this software.
4) If you open youtube in Mozilla Firefox, you will see a click-button hovering over the video stating "download this video". This makes the youtbe downloads the easiest and the fastest.
5) Note: I tried the same in G-Chrome but it didn't work. I did not try it in IE, Opera and Safari.

I downloaded the 18 episodes of "Leonardo Da Vinci (Part x of 18)" last night from youtube. I was doing my assignments work and completing the file when the downloads completed in about 2.5 hours with an average speed of about 65kbps. Prior to this software, I could download only at about 8-9 kbps which took about 45 minutes to download even one episode. Incredible software. Enjoy.

Windows 7

Yesterday I installed Windows 7 on my system. The time when I bought my lappy, the shopkeeper instructed that my lappy had Intel Atom processor and it does not support any other OS higher to the version of XP. I checked the compatibility online and it worked. Processor was 1.66 and still the performance is wonderful. It's working absolutely fine and there is felt no problem.

Earlier I tried the simple theme of & Transformer pack. XP was lighter but after installing the minor 27 MB theme, the performance degraded to a lot of extent. The icons' size was also large and even the start panel overlapped my small 10' screen of HP Mini lappy. The new OS 7 was within the limits even at low resolution and I was not required to install the drivers even. Probably due to the already installed drivers in my earlier version of Windows (i.e. XP). I have also heard that the Vista and 7 have some inbuilt drivers for some of the most popular hardware vendors and the installation wizard is intelligent enough to identify the hardware and automatically install the appropriate and respective drivers. But I am not sure of this concept.

Well, I am quiet satisfied with the performance. The security is better and having more layers than XP. But still, a lot of experimentation is left to be done.
